POSITION SUMMARY:
Cincinnati Ballet is looking to hire a Principal Faculty, Division Head to join their Otto M. Budig Academy team. This leadership position is responsible for the delivery of high-quality dance instruction and programming for pre-professional ballet students. Based on experience and expertise, the Principal Faculty, Division Head will lead the Academy’s Young Dancer (Intermediate) or Advanced Division under the guidance of the Academy Director and will be responsible for mentoring and supporting fellow faculty members. With a keen focus on fostering career aptitude and a passion for dance, the Principal Faculty, Division Head should be well versed in all levels of ballet technique for advancing students ages 8 and up. The ideal candidate is a master ballet teacher, exceptionally proficient in various dance styles, serves as a strong ambassador for the organization, and possesses a professional, caring, and positive approach to teaching, mentoring, and student engagement. The Principal Faculty, Division Head will help innovate, plan, and execute programs that support the advancement of the Otto M. Budig Academy as one of the nation’s most prestigious dance education institutions.
Requirements
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide high-quality, age-appropriate instruction in ballet technique that meets the needs of and appropriately challenges and prepares students based on the Academy’s syllabus. Teaching responsibilities include a primary focus on pre-professional ballet training and will include ballet technique, pointe, partnering, repertoire, conditioning, and other select coursework. Teaching is inclusive of both school year and summer intensive programming and may also include the Academy’s Adult Division as well as serving as a substitute instructor in other divisions.
- Provide oversight to the Academy’s Young Dancer or Advanced Division, under the guidance of the Academy Director, helping to shape curriculum, learning objectives, and overall student engagement and wellbeing.
- Coordinate with the Academy Director in managing faculty within the division.
- Mentor students in the artistic, musical, and mental demands for a career in dance. Provide career guidance for aspiring students.
- Create an inspiring and compassionate environment for all participants, providing corrections and encouragement to all students equitably.
- Choreograph, stage, and rehearse works for students to perform throughout the year in both mainstage, studio, and community settings, ensuring a high-quality production.
- Create learning opportunities outside of the studio that supports the student’s growth as a dancer.
- Lead recruitment efforts and practices that advance the caliber of all programs. Represent the Academy during our national audition tour and at various competitions, festivals, and events.
- Maintain proper discipline in the studio and enforce disciplinary action as necessary as determined by Cincinnati Ballet behavioral guidelines.
- Record and report on student attendance and monitor student progress.
- Formally evaluate each student up to two times annually. Meet with students and parents to provide feedback and assistance when appropriate.
- Adhere to all Cincinnati Ballet program policies, employee guidelines, and Academy Instructor expectations at all times.
- Exhibit appropriate behavior and language to ensure all spaces and classes are welcoming and inclusive to all students and their family members.
- Maintain collaborative and clear communication with supervisor on all department matters. Provide regular and timely feedback on the status of programs, student progress, and disciplinary issues.
- Maintain a proactive and flexible approach to work including a willingness to participate in marketing and recruitment initiatives as well as Academy events and performances.
- Check emails regularly and respond to all communications in a timely manner.
- Attend all faculty meetings, training, and continuing education activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned which may occur outside of the regular class schedule.
KEY PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:
- In-depth knowledge of classical ballet and pedagogical techniques and a strong working knowledge of contemporary ballet. A college degree in dance preferred or equivalent professional dance training/experience in ballet and other dance styles.
- Minimum of five years of advancing teaching experience in ballet.
- Strong experience in choreography and/or staging and rehearsal of dance works.
- Nurturing demeanor with the ability to exercise authority and discipline when necessary.
- A passion for serving students and families and a commitment to the values and culture of Cincinnati Ballet’s Academy and Education programs.
- Proven ability to work sensitively and effectively with people from a variety of different ethnic, socio-economic, educational, religious, sexual orientations, and generational backgrounds.
- Exceptional judgment and an unwavering commitment to ensuring the protection and safety of minors including appropriate staff-student relationships.
- Clear and compassionate communicator.
- Effective administrator with a collaborative spirit, strong attention to detail, and excellent organizational skills.
- Desire to learn and grow in teaching practice and leadership development.
- Proficient in modern technologies including but not limited to MS Office and Zoom.
ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS:
- Top candidates must be willing to teach an in-person class as part of the interviewing process.
- To be considered for this position, candidates must be willing to complete a criminal background, motor vehicle, and credit checks.
- Must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 at the time of employment, as defined by the CDC.
EXPECTED WORK HOURS AND TRAVEL:
- Must be able to work a highly flexible schedule which may include weekday and/or weekend hours between 9 am and 8:30 pm. Most hours are scheduled in advance, but weekly flexibility is required. Hours change seasonally. On occasion, travel to audition sites, performance venues, and community centers may be required.
