Gift Shop Manager/Buyer
Description
Wharton Gifts is a retail shop located in the main lobby of Wharton Center for Performing Arts at Michigan State University. This gift shop supports the Wharton Center's goal to help shape our community for the better by showcasing experiences that inspire the mind and move the soul. Wharton Gifts currently specializes in performance-related items from artwork, books, accessories and unique gifts.
The Gift Shop Manager will lead a collaborative team charged with the success of the store by driving sales, supporting and mentoring a student and volunteer staff. This person will oversee buying, inventory control, merchandising, and will participate in marketing efforts of the shop. The Gift Shop Manager will ensure productivity and profitability while creating a welcoming and safe environment focused on customer service and operational goals.
This is a 30 hour/week, 12 month position.

Requirements
General Responsibilities:
- Manage general business operations of the store while following company procedures.
- Create and manage annual budget.
- Responsible for sourcing, purchasing, and management of inventory.
- Provide day-to-day leadership to achieve strategic and operational objectives.
- Ability to understand product assortment and layout to drive sales and grow revenue.
- Provide friendly, helpful, and courteous service to all visitors.
- Answer questions about products and services provided by the shop and the Center.
- Lead periodic training sessions to keep volunteers and other students/staff up to date and informed about all merchandise.
- Create and sustain relationships with vendors of the shop.
- Recruit, hire, schedule, and train students and temp/on call employees.
- Maintain open lines of communication with all shop staff and volunteers.
- Immediately reports unsafe conditions and/or practices to Wharton Center’s senior management.
- Responsible for creating and managing an ecommerce storefront (MSU CashNet) for online merchandise sales.
- Maintain cash drawer and conduct sales transactions, including opening and closing procedures.
- Establish sales goals and an implementation plan.
- Provide sales performance reports for every event/concert.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for PCI-DSS (credit card security) compliance for the shop.
